Thornber Street (Building Ideas)
Master Builders South Australia – Building Ideas Segment
This feature piece on the Master Builders Building Ideas segment on Channel 9 showcases this award winning custom built masterpiece.
The rust of the custom, oversized corten steel gate contrasts against the sleek black granite tiles lining the entrance breezeway, which unfolds to reveal a cutting-edge family home. The fragmented floor plan is a fusion of modernism with a hint of Japanese style that is wrapped in brickwork creating a personal sanctuary.
The home is jam-packed with features such as a fire place encased in magnificent local Kanmantoo stonework; a purpose built wine room that is lined and ventilated for optimal temperature control; and raised 4.2m ceilings in the open plan kitchen, living and dining area creates a sense of grandeur.
The kitchen is a masterful play of contrasting materials and colour. The black joinery frames the exquisite Straturaio splashback, which is balanced by the warmth of timber used in the overhead joinery, island bench and hardwood floors. Leading off the kitchen, are custom recessed sliding doors that blur the boundary of indoor and outdoor space. Overlooking the pool and spa, the alfresco area is complete with a built-in kitchen and strip heaters. It’s every entertainer’s dream.
The client had a clear vision of the home and was influential in the concept design through to construction and was engaged in all development stages. The site, however, posed significant challenges being located in a character area, the façade is sympathetic to the streetscape. The north facing orientation of the home ensures optimal thermal performance in the South Australian climate. The building’s efficiency is further enhanced by the thermal mass of the breezeway, insulation and striking fan to family area.
Overall, this home is a stunning example of Australian architecture, cutting edge style, innovation, and quality workmanship.
